Seminar adds to supermarket chain’s success

10 February 2007

Superquinn, the Irish supermarket chain renowned for fresh food and excellent customer service, selected the e-learning authoring tool, Seminar Author, and Information Transfer to help them supplement their on-the-job training for the 4,500 staff in their 20 stores.

Information Transfer consultants Debbie Ganz and Tove Luther worked with the training team to design and run a pilot programme, including defining the appropriate style of the e-learning, writing the pilot modules in Seminar Author, configuring the on-line tracking systems and identifying potential hurdles to the introduction of e-learning across the company.

Colleague feedback very positive

Many learners hadn’t used e-learning before, so the four pilot modules were very simple to use. The pictures were all taken in a Superquinn store, so the modules were closely related to the user’s experience on the shop floor – a great advantage of bespoke e-learning content.

“The feedback from the pilot project has exceeded our expectations on every level,” said Rosaleen Perry, Superquinn’s training and development manager. “Training has become a hot topic and colleagues are enquiring as to when the next batch of modules will be available.”

Both users and managers found it really improved understanding, and liked the way the e-learning was up-to-date, engaging, and always available.

Users particularly appreciated the way the courses were bookmarked – if they were called back to the shop floor in the middle of an on-line session it was easy to restart the training from where they’d left off. Rosaleen now believes that e-learning is the way forward for the training and development of colleagues in the company.

Running on their own two feet

With training and guidance from Information Transfer, Superquinn’s in-house content development team is now using the Seminar Author e-learning authoring system to produce the full suite of induction modules for a phased roll-out. All stores are expected to have access to e-learning by the end of the summer, and Seminar and Information Transfer will be working with the Superquinn team to make the roll-out successful.

“We would not have been able to provide such a high-quality training product without the help of Information Transfer,” said Rosaleen. “Their experience in this field and level of professionalism has ensured that we have provided a superior quality training offering that has captured the interest of our colleagues.”
