Another successful year of online CPD for the Law Society of Scotland
March 2006 An online learning service, developed by Information Transfer for the Law Society of Scotland using the Seminar Knowledge Centre, has entered its third year of operation with more than 4,000 users having completed training. Users now have a completely fresh, updated course, delivering essential compliance training on money laundering law and prevention. Information Transfer collaborated with the Society to design and set up their e-learning management system using the Seminar Knowlege Centre, and since 2003 solicitors in Scotland have been able to register CPD time through the service. For the last two academic years it has also been opened up to Law Diploma students in the Scottish universities. Thousands of users have completed the training so far and all without placing any demands on the Society's resources - and at a price equivalent to a few miles' motor expenses. The content is always up-to-date and reflects any legal or regulatory changes. Users can sign up and start the training immediately. The Seminar Knowledge Centre provides them with a certificate record of their learning, both as evidence of compliance with the legal requirement to complete training on money laundering prevention, but also as a record for the individual's CPD credits. Law firms with many staff to train have access to their own corporate area within the learning centre - in effect a private segment of the database, with its own branded portal. Each individual user logs on to their personal training page, showing what they have completed and what remains to be done. The firm's training or compliance manager can then monitor the progress and performance of all their users. A similar system works for each University Law School, which have now incorporated the course as part of their syllabus. It allows the tutor to track the department's diploma students. Although initially containing just the one course, the system can easily include material on any other topic, and be developed into an online library of interactive learning. The online learning centre system is just one of many such sites that Information Transfer has set up. Some, like this one for the Law Society of Scotland, are accessed across the Internet, while others are installed on clients' intranets. The Seminar Knowledge Centre software provides a cost-effective, tried and tested, management system for delivery and monitoring of e-learning. |
